Mobile app growth gives PhotoBox a reason to smile

In 2012, we launched the first transactional iPhone app for successful online retailer PhotoBox and embarked on a mobile strategy. Fast forward to the present day and we’ve conceptualised, designed and delivered an intuitive mobile app which is available throughout Europe for iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

Attracting a significant number of new customers to the brand, the apps enable users to create personalised mugs, calendars, phone cases and more, directly from the device in their hands, using photos from iCloud, Instagram, Facebook, Google and Dropbox. We’ve engineered full account integration for easy delivery and billing, and continue to analyse in-app statistics to further enhance the user experience.

12 million

releases in 2014

In 2012, Common supported successful online retailer PhotoBox as they embarked upon their journey into the exciting world of mobile apps.

Personalising gifts such as mugs, canvases, phone cases and calendars could be a fairly laborious task when using a mobile device. However, in conjunction with PhotoBox’s in-house team, Common has engineered user-friendly creation studios that make the UX enjoyable and best lend themselves to successful order completion.

For example, images can be utilised from different sources on the customer’s device – including Facebook, camera roll, iCloud, Google photos, Instagram and Dropbox – in order to provide maximum app flexibility, with minimum fuss.

Now available in 16 countries, the apps have been expertly translated and fully localised in 10 different languages. However, the apps’ journey will not stop there. Common and PhotoBox continue to introduce new products and features to keep customers engaged, and regular iterations and updates are rolled out to ensure optimum app performance.

In 2014, Common also launched a native Android app for PhotoBox, following an intensive six-month period of design, development and testing. Initially released in the UK, Ireland and France, the app was then made available in the Spanish, German, Swedish and Italian app stores. Just before Christmas 2014, it was rolled out in New Zealand, Australia and Canada too.

The apps continue to see phenomenal growth, with downloads and updates nearing 10 million and a significant number of new, previously unseen customers transacting with the brand.

Robert May, managing director of PhotoBox in the UK, explains: “Having experienced the success of the iOS app, it was important that we developed a native mobile strategy for Android too. This most recent app will support our ongoing business expansion, and ensure we interact with a variety of customers using different mobile devices.”

“We are constantly optimising our communications strategy for the benefit of both our customers and the business, so we don’t intend to stop investing in our apps. Apps don’t exist for marketing purposes – they are a vital part of our retailing infrastructure.”

Speaking of this long-term project, Common’s Managing Director Simon Howship adds: “The fact that we have worked with PhotoBox for over 3 years demonstrates our ethos of partnership rather than just being another supplier. We are very passionate about what we do and regularly go above and beyond the call of duty.”

“We have a great team at Common that works very hard, including late nights and weekends, to ensure the PhotoBox apps continue to delight. I believe the fact that we delivered 26 app store releases in 2014 demonstrates our specialist native app design, development and management capabilities, but most importantly our energy and enthusiasm.”
